Safety

  • All rowers must be able to swim.

  • Junior rowers must be accompanied by a coach at all times.

  • Absolutely no rowing is allowed 15 minutes before sunrise or 15 minutes after sunset without adequate lighting. There must be a light on both ends of the boat and all coaching launches must have lights. Scullers must attach a light to their hat or collar.

  • No rowing in the fog.

  • All coxed boats must go out with a coxswain.

  • There must be an experienced coxswain and/or at least two experienced sweep rowers in any master’s boat practicing without a coach.

  • Inexperienced rowers using club singles and doubles must follow the “Rule of Four Oars.” Two singles or two pairs must go out together and maintain sight of each other during the row. Experienced scullers are encouraged to adhere to the “rule of four” in colder weather.

  • Rowers and coaches will be attentive to, and obey, the safety rules and guidelines provided by USRA and posted in the Club boathouse. Site and season specific rules may also be posted.

  • If a boat should capsize, do NOT leave the boat and attempt to swim to shore. Stay with the boat. Wait for your coach’s instructions or push your boat to shore.

  • Rowers failing to observe these rules shall be subject to disciplinary action by the Board.
Equipment For
Races and Regattas

  • Coaches or rowers who wish to use SCRC equipment at races and regattas must submit their request for Board approval. Reservations for equipment should be made at least two weeks before the event.

  • Under no circumstances can SCRC equipment be used by non-members without the direct supervision of a member and the consent of the Board.

  • Individuals or crews using equipment at away races are responsible for the rigging and de-rigging, transportation, loading, unloading and re-rigging of the equipment (within 24 hours of return).

  • Lost equipment will be replaced at the expense of those who borrowed it.

  • Members and coaches taking equipment to races must be in communication with other groups who are sharing the boats and oars for practices.

  • If a conflict exists, priority will be given to crews consisting entirely of Charger members rather than “composite crews.”
Other issues concerning equipment will be resolved on a case-by-case basis by the Board.

  • The Board will review requests to loan equipment to other organizations on a case-by-case basis.

Boathouse Rules
