Corporate Rowing League 2011
The Syracuse Chargers Rowing Club hosted its first annual Corporate Rowing League early this summer. The Program consisted of six on-the-water sessions followed by a final session which included two 500 meter races. While there were a few members that had previous rowing experience many of the individuals were experiencing the thrill of rowing for the first time. Three major corporations/organizations were represented. King and King Architects, Parsons Engineering, and the Ferrrara Law firm were the major representations with individuals from Haylor, Freyer, and Coon, and Honeywell rounding out the field. The Challenge ended with two races and a following BBQ outside of the Chargers Boathouse. King and King Architects took home the Inaugural trophy by winning both pieces with open water. Congratulations to the winners. If you are interested in joining next years corporate rowing league please contact Nick Scholz at nscholz@scsd.us. There will be two challenges next year. Session 1 will run form Late Spring into summer and session 2 will run from Late Summer into Fall) To see more photos and videos from the day check out our Facebook page.
This program will focus on the development of athletes who have recently finished a Summer Learn-to-Row session, or would like to participate as a Chargers Rowing member but without the emphasis on competitive Racing. (Racing will be decided by the coach and the athletes involved.) This program will allow for adult members to row in a recreational setting for the extent to which they chose or allow them to progress up the ladder and eventually join the Competitive Masters Program when they feel like they are ready for that challenge but with no pressure to ever do so. Athletes are expected to communicate to their coach their schedule and expectations for the program.
*if you want to sign up for these two programs now please use the paper forms until they are added to the online registration process.

SRAA (Scholastic Rowing Association of America) Nationals
The Junior 4+ entered the competition with confidence as the girls continued to improve throughout the season.
The venue in Cherry Hill was quite magnificent, and the weather close to perfect for the weekend. There were over 115 teams that qualified for the National Regatta, with nearly a thousand boats competing.
Friday's heats were hectic and full of tension, as the top two boats in each heat qualified for the semi-finals (top 12). With power and strength, FM's boat calmly won their heat by almost 15 seconds. That qualified them for the semis and a showdown with Nardin, a Buffalo rowing powerhouse, and Emma Willard – both teams that had beat them at States.
Saturday's semi went much differently than Friday's heats, as they combined strategy and power to make their way to the finals. Nardin had a plan to attack them at the middle 500 meters, but F-M coxswain Nikole Metz kept them at bay at each power 10 stroke with F-M's own power 10 to maintain a comfortable lead cruising to a 5 second win, and a spot in the Grand Finals.
Qualifying for the Grand Finals officially made them the highest placed national girl's team in F-M history.
Finals are much different than the heats and semis. Seasoned boats know that if they place top two in their heats they advance, so some of the faster boats perform at the minimum effort to simply qualify for the next level. The final would have each boat using their greatest effort to win.
F-M's boat had such great runs in the heats and semis that they had yet to break into a sprint at Nationals, but at 500 meters all 6 boats were in full sprint. At 400 meters Montclair (NJ) and Germantown (MD) were making strong moves to catch them, but at 100 meters my binoculars were dangling from my neck as tears swelled in my eyes. There was no way any boat would catch F-M as they met each challenge with an equal or faster stroke. They were after all, National Champions.
Recently the Chargers were able to take part in the Welleness Day at Ray Middle School.
Students had teh opptortunity to learn about rowing and how rowing can be part of a healthy active life.
